Montessori: 5 preconceived ideas that need to be challenged

Is Montessori really framework-free? Reserved for certain children? Not demanding enough? We take a look back at 5 preconceived ideas to better understand what this pedagogy really proposes on a daily basis.

The word Montessori is causing a stir.
Some families see it as a beautiful, child-centered approach. Others have reservations, sometimes because they’ve heard contradictory things.

The truth is, there are still a lot of preconceived ideas about Montessori pedagogy. Here are some of the most common.

Myth n°1: “In Montessori, children do what they want”.

This is probably the most widespread cliché.

In reality, autonomy does not mean the absence of a framework. A Montessori environment is based on :

  • clear benchmarks
  • an organized space
  • equipment designed for learning
  • rules of living
  • an attentive adult posture

The child chooses certain activities, yes – but within a structured framework, with real support.

Myth n°2: “It’s too permissive an approach”.

We sometimes confuse benevolence with laxity. However, a well-managed Montessori approach requires a great deal of rigor.

It is based on :

  • close observation of the child
  • the quality of the setting
  • learning progression
  • respecting each individual’s rhythm
  • a high level of pedagogical consistency

It’s not “letting go”. It means providing the right support.

Myth no. 3: “Children are not prepared for what comes next”.

Here again, this idea needs to be qualified.

Serious Montessorian pedagogy does not ignore the fundamentals. Quite the contrary, in fact. It seeks to give meaning to learning: reading, writing, counting, reasoning, concentrating, gaining autonomy.

The aim is not to remove the requirement, but to approach it differently:

  • with more customization
  • with closer monitoring
  • with more meaning for the child

Myth #4: “It’s only for certain types of children”.

We sometimes hear that Montessori is only suitable for children who are already calm, very independent or “easy”.

But one of the great advantages of this approach is that it recognizes that every child is different.

Not everyone progresses in the same way. Not everyone has the same needs. And that’s precisely why individualized support can be invaluable.

Myth no. 5: “Montessori is an old-fashioned, out-of-touch method”.

Montessori principles have been around for a long time, but many of their foundations are still very much relevant today:

  • learning by doing
  • encouraging autonomy
  • respect the child’s rhythm
  • develop concentration
  • giving students an active role

It’s not a fixed pedagogy. When well thought out, it can be part of a modern, lively and demanding approach.

So, what should we really be looking at?

Rather than relying on the label alone, it’s better to ask the right questions:

  • What’s the setting for the child?
  • What place is given to support?
  • How is learning monitored?
  • What kind of relationship does the school build with families?
  • Can the child progress with confidence?

In the end, it’s not just the word Montessori that counts.
It’s the way a school puts its principles into practice every day, with seriousness, consistency and benevolence.
