Andrea Mechelli&#8217;s work (2004) shows an increase in gray matter in areas linked to language and cognitive control. Ellen Bialystok shows that bilingual children develop better executive functions: memory, attention and the ability to filter out distractions.  <\/p>\n<p>In concrete terms, a bilingual child :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>retains complex instructions more easily<\/li>\n<li>stays focused even in noisy environments  <\/li>\n<li>move from one task to another with greater fluidity<\/li>\n<li>solves problems more flexibly  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A study by Albert Costa (2008) shows that they outperform monolinguals in cognitive conflict resolution tasks. Bilingualism also acts as a training ground for listening: children develop a <strong>heightened sensitivity to sounds and intonations<\/strong>, facilitating future learning of other languages. A study by the University of York (Bialystok &#038; Barac, 2012) shows that bilingual children often achieve better academic results, particularly in reading and mathematics. <\/p>\n<p>Why? Children develop a better understanding of others, adjust their communication to different contexts and gain in confidence. In one famous experiment, bilingual children showed a greater ability to put themselves in an adult&#8217;s shoes by correctly interpreting what they saw &#8211; evidence of a <strong>more developed empathy <\/strong>.    <\/p>\n<p>This openness promotes :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>more refined communication<\/li>\n<li>greater social comfort<\/li>\n<li>greater self-confidence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this way, they become true <strong>citizens of the world<\/strong>, able to evolve serenely in multicultural environments.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d88635 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"4d88635\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8bfe703 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"8bfe703\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-00a1387 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"00a1387\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Learning two languages in practice  <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Maria Montessori emphasized the existence of a &#8220;sensitive language period&#8221; during which the child naturally acquires the sounds, structures and nuances of several languages.<\/p>\n<p>There are in fact two forms of bilingualism:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>simultaneous bilingualism<\/strong>: two languages from birth<\/li>\n<li><strong>sequential bilingualism<\/strong>: a second language introduced after 3 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this second case, the child relies on his mother tongue, may go through a phase of silent observation and temporarily mix languages. This is perfectly normal. <\/p>\n<p>Good news: it&#8217;<strong> s never too late to become bilingual.<\/strong> Even after the age of 5, the brain remains highly adaptable.
