The word Montessori<\/em> is causing a stir.
Some families see it as a beautiful, child-centered approach. Others have reservations, sometimes because they’ve heard contradictory things. <\/p>

The truth is, there are still a lot of preconceived ideas about Montessori pedagogy. Here are some of the most common. <\/p>

Myth n\u00b01: “In Montessori, children do what they want”.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>

This is probably the most widespread clich\u00e9.<\/p>

In reality, autonomy does not mean the absence of a framework. A Montessori environment is based on : <\/p>

  • clear benchmarks<\/li>
  • an organized space<\/li>
  • equipment designed for learning<\/li>
  • rules of living<\/li>
  • an attentive adult posture<\/li><\/ul>

    The child chooses certain activities, yes – but within a structured framework, with real support.<\/p>

    Myth n\u00b02: “It’s too permissive an approach”.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>

    We sometimes confuse benevolence with laxity. However, a well-managed Montessori approach requires a great deal of rigor. <\/p>

    It is based on :<\/p>

    • close observation of the child<\/li>
    • the quality of the setting<\/li>
    • learning progression<\/li>
    • respecting each individual’s rhythm<\/li>
    • a high level of pedagogical consistency<\/li><\/ul>

      It’s not “letting go”. It means providing the right support. <\/p>

      Myth no. 3: “Children are not prepared for what comes next”.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>

      Here again, this idea needs to be qualified.<\/p>

      Serious Montessorian pedagogy does not ignore the fundamentals. Quite the contrary, in fact. It seeks to give meaning to learning: reading, writing, counting, reasoning, concentrating, gaining autonomy. <\/p>

      The aim is not to remove the requirement, but to approach it differently:<\/p>

      • with more customization<\/li>
      • with closer monitoring<\/li>
      • with more meaning for the child<\/li><\/ul>

        Myth #4: “It’s only for certain types of children”.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>

        We sometimes hear that Montessori is only suitable for children who are already calm, very independent or “easy”.<\/p>

        But one of the great advantages of this approach is that it recognizes that every child is different.<\/p>

        Not everyone progresses in the same way. Not everyone has the same needs. And that’s precisely why individualized support can be invaluable. <\/p>

        Myth no. 5: “Montessori is an old-fashioned, out-of-touch method”.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>

        Montessori principles have been around for a long time, but many of their foundations are still very much relevant today:<\/p>

        • learning by doing<\/li>
        • encouraging autonomy<\/li>
        • respect the child’s rhythm<\/li>
        • develop concentration<\/li>
        • giving students an active role<\/li><\/ul>

          It’s not a fixed pedagogy. When well thought out, it can be part of a modern, lively and demanding approach. <\/p>

          So, what should we really be looking at?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>

          Rather than relying on the label alone, it’s better to ask the right questions:<\/p>

          • What’s the setting for the child?<\/li>
          • What place is given to support?<\/li>
          • How is learning monitored?<\/li>
          • What kind of relationship does the school build with families?<\/li>
          • Can the child progress with confidence?<\/li><\/ul>

            In the end, it’s not just the word Montessori<\/em> that counts.
